A JOURNEY TO THE HEART OF TAMBUZI GARDEN ROSES

Share

Every year, a member of our team embarks on a journey to visit the farms we work with, strengthening our relationships and deepening our understanding of the exquisite flowers we bring to our customers. This year, the honour fell to Brent Kandoorp, who set off to the breath-taking Tambuzi Garden Roses in Kenya. What made this trip even more special was that he was joined by renowned florist Bart Bresser and his talented team, along with our marketing guru extraordinaire, Cindy Cooper. (yes, I am the one writing this)

From the moment we arrived in Kenya, we were immersed in the beauty and hospitality of the country. Vases of fragrant garden roses greeted us at our hotel, setting the tone for an inspiring week ahead. The drive to Nanyuki was a journey in itself—Kenya’s roads are always an adventure, offering incredible sights and glimpses of daily life. Upon arrival, we took in our surroundings, explored the farm, and prepared for an exciting few days ahead.

Our own personal photographer

Adding to the magic of the trip was the presence of Leonie Jansen, a dear friend of Bart’s and a truly exceptional photographer. Leonie beautifully captured every special moment, from the golden sunrise over the rose fields to the intricate floral creations taking shape in the packhouse. Her ability to tell a story through her lens is a rare gift, and it was an absolute pleasure to have her with us. Thanks to her talent, the memories of this trip will be forever frozen in time, in the most breathtaking way

Exploring the Farm & Community

The week was filled with unforgettable experiences. We visited the vibrant local market, toured the Pendekeza initiative, and got a first-hand look at the sustainable pig farming at Turaco. The full farm tour at Burguret was a highlight, where we walked among the roses, harvested blooms alongside the skilled Tambuzi staff.

Wednesday saw Bart and his team working their floral magic with the exquisite Tambuzi roses, transforming the packhouse into a floral wonderland. That evening, we gathered on the veranda for a beautifully prepared supper by Ot, Jesse, and Shadrack, enjoying an evening of laughter, stories, and the delicious flavours of Kenya.

Floral Mastery & Conservation

Thursday was a particularly special day. In the morning, Bart led an inspiring class in the packhouse, teaching around 50 members of the Tambuzi team the art of bouquet making and wrapping. It was incredible to watch the passion and enthusiasm of the staff as they honed their skills under his expert guidance. Later that afternoon, we embarked on a breathtaking game drive at Ol Pejeta, where we had the privilege of witnessing Kenya’s stunning wildlife up close.

As the trip drew to a close, we visited the Cinnabar Green farm to learn about essential oil production and had the opportunity to engage with the local community, including a visit to the Bresser Bloemen water tank project. Our final supper together was a celebration of friendship, shared passion, and the unforgettable experiences we had gathered throughout the week.

A Lasting Impression

Tambuzi is more than just a farm—it’s a community, a family, and a place where passion for flowers is deeply rooted in every aspect of daily life. Brent’s visit was not just about seeing where our roses come from; it was about understanding the dedication, craftsmanship, and heart that goes into every bloom.

As we return home, we carry with us the scent of fresh roses, the warmth of Kenyan hospitality, and a renewed appreciation for the beautiful journey that each flower takes before reaching its final destination.

But before we go…

We have a few mentions, firstly thank you so much to Tim and Maggie Hobbs for opening their home to us and treating us like long lost friends. A huge thank you to everyone on the farm for making us feel so welcome and sharing your Tambuzi experience with us.

Finally, as we mentioned Bart travelled with a group of people who all deserve a mention too;

  • Nel, Bart’s daughter who works in the flower shop with him and on many large scale events, who stepped in and helped on many of the floristry tasks and is a very special, fun and kind young lady.
  • Ot, her brother, who owns his own restaurant in the Netherlands, is an amazing chef with a huge zest for life and the most phenomenal smile. The Highland Castle Farms team loved having you round.
  • Ot’s friend (he arrived with a nickname) Jesse helps Ot in the restaurant and also works as a police officer. He bought a certain calm with him and made the most fantastic mandazi. The canteen loved having you.
  • Theo, Leonie’s husband, who works in logistics at home and aptly became part of what we fondly named “Team Logistics”. He was super chilled and just always there when we needed him.
  • Dave, who is a mystery to us, he was the other half of “Team Logistics” but could wield a pair of secateurs like a pro, we think he’s definitely a florist in the making. Such a support to us all!
  • And of course, our youngest fan, little Jason who is Brents firstborn son and of course the beautiful, calm and patient Famke who kept Jason busy whilst we worked – it was lovely to spend time with you both.
