David Austin Wedding & Event Roses are bred at the nursery in Shropshire, England, where David Austin lived all his life. In the late 1940s, a book on old roses inspired him to create a more beautiful rose. This new rose was the perfect combination of the unique charm and fragrance of old garden roses with the wide color range and repeat-flowering qualities of modern roses. A new rose for the garden was born.
In the early 1990s, David Austin with his son, started a new breeding programme designed specifically for creating a new type of cut rose for the floral industry. The same principles were applied that had made his roses for the garden so popular. The result being a collection of cut roses designed for weddings and special occasions, which are available 12 months of the year.
Creating a new, beautiful rose is a combination of art and science and requires a huge amount of patience and experience. Each rose can take up to nine years to develop, and like most things of exceptional beauty, it can test the patience of even the most passionate rose breeder. David Austin never gave up and succeeded in creating two first-class portfolios – over 200 roses for the garden and more recently the beautiful David Austin Wedding & Event Rose collection.

David Austin was born in 1926. As the son of a farmer, he began his work life on the farm before going into business as a nurseryman in the early 1960s. David Austin dedicated his life to creating beautifully scented roses for gardens and florists.
Following his death in 2018, David Austin’s legacy continued under the stewardship of his son, David Jnr. David Austin will be remembered as one of the greatest rose breeders of all time and the man responsible for creating the world’s first horticultural brand.
